The
Minnesota State Society held its 17th consecutive cookout at the
Northern Virginia Training Center (NVTC) on May 12. The residents of
the NVTC are retarded and some are also physically disabled. We started
our visit in mid-afternoon when we played games with the residents.
We encouraged the residents to shoot baskets and we played catch with
them. But the residents got impatient to be served their dinners.
The
Minnesota members bought the food around 1:00 p.m. and then used the
three grills under the covered pavillion to cook the food around 4:30
to 5:00 p.m. Dinner consisted of hamburgers and hot dogs, New England
potato salad, potato chips, soft drinks, and ice cream. The Minnesota
members served about 30 residents and four counselors. The Director
of the NVTC came to visit the Minnesota group and commended them for
their efforts the past 17 years.
Thanks
for the all dedicated Minnesota State Society volunteers!
