This
project builds upon already existing Summer Feeding programs funded
by the USDA. The USDA programs provide a breakfast and lunch to eligible
children, much like the reduced price/free meal programs during regular
school sessions. What makes the Food For Kids project unique is that
we do two things: 1. Provide an evening meal (through Friendship Housethey
are preparing these meals); 2. Providing children with a bag of groceries
to take home for the weekend. Instead of two meals a day, three; instead
of 5 days a week, every day of the week.
We
estimate that we will need to produce 25,000+ bags per week by the second
week of July, and maintain that level through August. Volunteers are
needed to package these bags at our DC location, 645 Taylor Street,
NE. We set up an assembly line, and everybody has a sheet that tells
you how much of which product to place in the bags as they pass in front
of you. Some volunteers serve as the supply line, replenish needed items,
hauling away trash, and loading completed boxes of bags onto pallets.
